My host even gave me directions to get to Ella on the bus and came to make sure I found the bus stop ok- this was so lovely! We had an outstanding stay with Prashansa and her husband in September 2025 at the GVSR. The room (Eagle Family Suite) was very clean and a good size for three adults, with a balcony and ample seating to take in the forest. The serenity and greenery on the property is fantastic (if peace is what you’re looking for). It was great to also laze about in the hammocks in the large garden area they have. And there’s a bathtub in the suite we booked. The food was absolutely delicious and filling (huge portions) for breakfast and dinner (if you decide to eat at the property). The hospitality is wonderful, their motto about guests relaxing and them making things simple really shines through everything they do. They also organised an incredible safari at Udawalawa National Park for us. Amille is a very experienced and knowledgeable safari guide who took us to great spots to find elephants in a relatively dry season when most elephants are hiding. We got really close to some incredible wild elephants thanks to his great driving without disturbing their plans/activities. GVSR is just a few moments from a really amazing Elephant Transit Home as well, which you should try to visit. Don’t hesitate for a second to choose GVSR for your visit to Udawalawa.

The room was pristine and well equipped, with WiFi, AC, hot showers, mosquito nets and comfortable beds. The hosts were super friendly and welcoming and spoke very good English. The garden is beautiful and immaculately maintained, it really was a green paradise. The food was delicious, we tasted lots of different traditional Sri Lankan dishes with generous portions provided. The aubergine curry was a particular highlight. Highly recommend booking your Safari through the hosts, we did and it was a treat. Our guide was fantastic and he joyfully shared his knowledge and passion for animals with us. We saw lots of Elephants including babies and many other animals and birds, which we think was only possible due to his local knowledge. Don’t miss your chance to stay here if you’re in the area.

The Sri Lankan curry and Sri Lankan breakfast were incredible and the portion sizes were huge. The added extras were a bonus such as the complimentary 10 minute massage, the welcome drink, afternoon tea and mocktail with dinner. The location was perfect for safari. The staff were so accommodating and friendly!! The attention to detail at this hotel was fabulous, we could not understand how they manage to keep everything so clean and pristine but they do. We both agreed that this is one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had!!

Featuring family rooms, this property also provides guests with a terrace. City Elephant is ideally situated for getting to the park, right on the main drag through town. The owners are super friendly. My room was large with a good bed and good AC. The restaurant out by the street looks unassuming, but DO eat there...these guys cook beautifully. I had a rice/curry lunch that was just lovely.
