FAQs about hotels in Norte Region
The Essence of Portugal
With fabulous beaches stretching from Caminha by the Spanish border to just south of Espinho, Portugal’s Norte region is known for beautiful scenery and historic cities.
Most Norte hotels on Booking.com are in its UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital Porto (or Oporto). Attractively spread over hills, it has wine cellars storing port from the Douro River Valley vineyards upstream.
Voted one of Portugal’s most liveable cities, Vila Real has the Mateus house overlooking a peaceful pond. Guimarães boasts a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical centre and is known as the ‘birthplace of the Portugal’. Its stately castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança are well worth a visit.
Bragança itself is by Montesinho Natural Park in north-east Norte, and a keep remains from its former castle. Chaves also has a castle keep and a Roman stone bridge, but unlike Braga, it no longer has remains of its Roman baths, erected over hot springs. Braga’s crowning glory is the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, set high in hills, with a wonderful staircase and garden overlooking the city.
South of Galicia is the beautiful Peneda-Gerês area, Portugal’s only national park, and to its west is Viana do Castelo with its Norte beach hotels set on Blue Flag beaches. Also noteworthy is impressive Basilica de Santa Luzia, surveying the riverfront town below.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Excellent - What previous guests thought, 65 reviewsPet friendly accomodation was our key factor, also this feel of entire and fully equipped rural house gave a sense of how people live in this area. We got really hooked up by the chimney and setting up the fireplace. It's very remote from everything surrounded by the mountains. There is a bakery in the nearby Rouças village which is the only place where it's possible to buy bread. Everything else needs to purchased before coming here.Guest review byjzeppelinaEstonia

I recommend travelling outside the main holiday periods, as Porto has been discovered by many world tourists! Take the train from the wonderful Sao Bento station along the Douro river. The most scenic part is the final hour between Pinhao and Pocinho which is stunning. Boat trips along the river with views of the six bridges and the ancient boats that carried the wine barrels are very enjoyable, and a visit to the amazing central market is a must! Walk round with a glass of wine and choose items to take to a table to enjoy. Children would also love a return trip on the cable car, which is close to the wine caves. Make sure you also include a Fado concert!Guest review byGeorginaUnited Kingdom - 10

We liked the bed (a king size bed made of 2 twin beds): very good mattresses, very nice sheets. The location is excellent: in a quiet part of Vila Nova de Gaia, a 10-15 minute walk to the metro, Jardim do Morro, the river front, the wine cellars and supermarkets. Bring your best running shoes and train your calves before coming! The apt. M, the one with the balcony on the front and the church-like window, is on the top floor, accessible by elevator. It’s a good size for a couple. The kitchen has everything to cook a simple meal. There is a secure luggage storage in the lobby, very convenient. Adelaide (room service) is very nice.Guest review byElaineCanada - 8.0

A small city north of Porto, with a lot of history and attractions. Plenty of shops, cafes, old churches, and restaurants, but the bar scene is lacking. There are many senior citizens here, since it's one of the more affordable and lovable parts of Portugal. I like kebab restaurants, but otherwise cooked for myself in hostel kitchens.Guest review byKyleUnited States - 6.0

Intertesting port town with a huge monastery on top of a hill. Loved the restaurants and it is easy to drive to other areas of Northern Portugal from there. The weather was comfortable, too. Be sure to bring Euros for tram ride to monastery. We went there to rest and relax between our Spain and Portugal tours.Guest review byAnonymous - 10

This small city was an absolute gem - stunning ancient squares and streets filled with lovely cafes and restaurants, altogether not as touristy as it could have been and very easy to walk around. We dined in two of the main squares with traditional Portuguese cuisine and inexpensive wines, and lovely ice cream outlets. We took the cablecar up the hillside and walked back down. We visited the Ducal palace (fantastic reconstruction) and castle (ruin). We could easily have spent a week here relaxing and taking in the atmosphere. And very easy to reach from Oporto.Guest review byTraceyUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Matosinhos is a good place to visit if you want a vibrant neighbourhood near the sea. It’s not an holiday resort people live there it’s the type of place we like visiting. There are plenty of supermarkets, restaurants and cafes to suit your tastes. Public transport is good and plenty of opportunities to explore on foot.Guest review byElaineUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Beach at Esposende too difficult to swim in due to pepples.
Beach at Esposende too difficult to swim in due to pepples. Other beaches at Ofir and Apulia excellent. Limited supply of restaurants and limitless supply of banks!!! Surprised by the obvious wealth amongst the Portuguese people with holiday homes here. Very few estrangers. Not for sailors. Good for families. Some surprising sculptures dotted around the esplanade from 1997 one in particular near the San Lorenca fort at Esponsende.Guest review byRogerIreland - 10
This place gets a well-deserved 5 stars—no doubt about it!
This place gets a well-deserved 5 stars—no doubt about it! From the moment we walked in, it felt warm, cozy, and totally like home. It’s huge, sparkling clean, and honestly… it looks even better than in the photos (and that’s saying something!). Usually with apartments that look this good, you think: “Yeah right, too good to be true.” But nope—this one actually turned out to be better than too good! It’s got everything. And I mean everything: coffee machine, iron, washing machine, dishwasher… you name it, it’s there—and all in tip-top shape. We were just the two of us, but there’s more than enough space for 4 or even 6 people to hang out comfortably. And the view… wow. Just wow. Need a room with a view? Look no further—this is the one!Guest review byArjenNetherlands - 10

Vila do Conde is a charming town that is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of a large city, if that is what you are used to, or looking to get away from. There are many good restaurants in the area. We hired a car for the duration of our stay as we wanted to travel further afield whilst adding stops along the way and choosing the most scenic routes.Guest review byRujero
