Absolutely gorgeous, historic property, even more beautiful than is possible to show in photos. Our room was much larger than we expected, with a lovely balcony and view. Hotel is nestled in the breathtaking lush fields of Alentejo. The entire property exudes tranquility, making it the perfect escape for those seeking peace and connection with nature. The staff were incredibly welcoming, their hospitality truly made a difference. The hotel restaurant was a highlight of our visit. Every dish was crafted with fresh, local ingredients, bursting with authentic flavors. The vegetarian options were plentiful and thoughtfully prepared, and the wine list featured a fine selection of local wines. Room is tastefully decorated, it had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. The serene atmosphere of the hotel, combined with its eco-conscious approach, made our stay feel even more special. If you're looking for a retreat that combines natural beauty, outstanding hospitality, and exceptional dining, Gandum Village is the perfect destination. I can't wait to return!

FAQs about hotels in Alentejo

Castles, Cliffs and Countryside

Sleepy Alentejo is an agricultural region of rolling hills and cork plantations, south of the Tagus River. Many of the Booking.com accommodation options are Alentejo guest houses featuring traditional wooden beds with painted headboards.

The main city is historic Évora with its medieval cathedral, partly intact walls and remains of a Roman temple. There are also Roman remnants in Beja, with its hilltop castle and whitewashed houses, and Serpa, whose aqueduct forms part of the city walls.

Mértola is nestled in the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, while Portalegre is the gateway to the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Also here are beautiful Marvão, set on a steep escarpment and guarded by a castle, and Castelo de Vide whose castle is on a less-pronounced hill.

The South-West Alentejo and Vicentine Natural Park is on Portugal’s west coast and many Alentejo beach hotels are found in Vila Nova de Milfontes and nearby  Zambujeira do Mar, on a clifftop reminiscent of the Algarve.

By the Spain border, hilltop Monsaraz is partly enclosed by walls of a castle overlooking Alqueva Lake, formed by the dam downstream. Across the lake is the castle of Mourão, while to the north is Estremoz, known for colourful marble. East is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Elvas, whose 6 km aqueduct and 2 star-shaped forts are quite a sight.

Interesting town to visit, and not too touristy. Enjoyed seeing the chapel of bones, and the nativity scene collections. Stopped at a restaurant for lunch and staff were unhappy and unhelpful, need to up their game! Left and found a pleasant small cafe! A much better option.

Almograve is a beautiful town close to an amazing beach. The town itself was smaller than the surrounding towns with less amenities , like restaurants to choose from, but we were only there for one night so it was fine. We walked down the road to the beach to enjoy an amazing sunset. The weather was beautiful while we were there. ,

Sines is a great starting spot to explore both the super-long pretty much unbroken beach to the north that goes all the way to Troia, and the small pictoresque "cove" beaches to the south of Sines. The town is a bit rugged, and definitely not a fancy place, but so much more authentic for it. I guess it's pretty far down the perfect-spot tourist ladder and that's frankly absolutely great.
