I was very happy with my stay there. The staff was incredibly helpful, friendly and professional. Even though most of the staff did not speak English and I did not speak my Portuguese, we still communicated well with each other. I so appreciated the owner's consideration for my comfort and his staff seems to have the same sentiment. The location is away from the noises of the city which adds to the therapeutic feeling while you're there. You can easily drive to Coimbra about 20 minutes away and enjoy the quiet roads along the way. The restaurant is classy and has a big menu. I ordered the sliced cod which ended up being too salty and fishy-tasting. I don't know if it is the recipe or if the recipe needs to be adjusted. The service was excellent and their wine selection is impressive.

Perfect stay in a picturesque place. First of all, service is amazing, we had all we need and even more, it's a great feeling when people around wants to make your stay pleasant and comfortable. Breakfast is very good, we also ordered dinner which was served in a very nice way and was delicious. Near the village we saw a deer in a wild nature. And we had an amazing trekking to several waterfalls and also to windmills on the top of the mountain. And after day of walking the trails fireplace gaves us a feeling of coziness and tranquility. Room we ordered was not big, but big enough to feel comfortable. All amenities were in a perfect conditions and quantities. Induction hob, microvawe oven, fridge, small coffee machine, kitchen utensils, firewood and means for making a fireplace... Thank you for such a nice experience!

A Surprising Gem in Castelo Branco

A Surprising Gem in Castelo Branco Nestled in Portugal’s Beira Baixa region, Castelo Branco is a city that seamlessly blends medieval charm with contemporary surprises. After wandering through the narrow streets of the medieval town, I found myself unexpectedly enchanted by dinner at Mãos da Horta—a culinary surprise where local ingredients shine in creative, soulful dishes. The Jardim do Paço Episcopal, with its elegant baroque statues and manicured terraces, offers a peaceful retreat, while Parque do Barrocal stuns with its natural rock formations and striking modern design. Art lovers shouldn’t miss the Cargaleiro Museum, dedicated to the colorful works of Manuel Cargaleiro, and the city's amazing theatre brings a surprising dose of cultural sophistication. To wind down, Ponto Winebar is perfect for sipping regional wines in a relaxed yet refined atmosphere. With its great location, history, art, and unexpected culinary delights, Castelo Branco is far more than a stopover—it's a destination.

I was here for work, but added a day to go hiking in the Gardunha mountains. Good hiking trails, with good signposts. The tourism office offers brochures in English. I like the scale of the city: small & calm, but with a good variety of shops, bars & restaurants.

Lousã is a larger town than expected but not much in terms of things to do other than the schist villages nearby. You need a car to get around and you do need to plan ahead as restaurants do close between lunch and dinner. Also, most restaurants are not dog friendly and mainly only cafés have outdoor seating, so it's not an option to bring your dog to dinner. Overall it was a beautiful visit and it's a peaceful place to be.

Unhais da Serra is a very small town.

Unhais da Serra is a very small town. It has one outstanding restaurant - As Thermas and another couple of ones that are good options as well. A couple of local shops that carry the delicious cheeses, charcuterie and liquors made in Serra da Estrela. We always stop to replenish or stock - we prefer the tiny mini-market, but the fancier shop has sweatshirts, slippers and interesting items as well. It's the perfect get-away for rest and relaxation. We park the car at the H2otel and do walking to everywhere we need to go over the weekend. I'd say a 3-4 night stay is ideal.

Our host was kind and generous with her time answering our many questions. She bakes the most delicious cakes and serves a wonderful cup of coffee in a charming old world setting. The location is isolated, yet shouldn't be missed. Just enough choices of eateries in the town square.

The town has a history of an artist's retreat, with a museum and Malhoa, the most famous artist's, residence. It has historic medieval buildings in a cobblestreet old town center. There is a large Saturday market with a lot of variety. The hilly countryside is gorgeous and features Sao Simao River Beach for swimming and hiking. It is easy to spend a week or more in the area.
