FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

- From $92.84 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.3Very Good - What previous guests thought, 2,766 reviewsVery nice, clean and modern hotel. The location is ideal for our pilgrimage to St. Rita. It is practically just next to the Basilica. The buffet breakfast had plenty of selections. The staff were very helpful in facilitating our visit to Rocaporena, St. Rita’s hometown, for a very reasonable fee. The driver dropped us off and picked us up at our chosen time, which was great since the public bus service was only twice a day at 9:00am and 1:00pm. The staff at the reception were always cheerful in giving us the information we needed. They also arranged our ride “down to the bus stop” when we departed at 6:30am. For these, we are truly thankful!Guest review byTERESITACanada

The views of Todi and the surrounding areas were breathtaking. We stayed just two nights and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere. Our room was beautiful - nice and big with nice windows. Dinner was great, breakfast was fine. We also did the wine tasting and ended up ordering a few cases of their wine. We will definitely be back and have recommended it to everyone we talk to! We've been to Tuscany many times and but are now Umbria fans!Guest review byKatieUnited Kingdom

A beautiful and spiritual city that you can travel both inside and outside. I was only 5_6 days It was very short. You should stay at least two weeks. I am glad that Avatar Meher Baba has been in Assisi in the 19th century too. A Diamond in a diamond city. One could meditate on Avatar Meher Baba, Saint Francis of Assisi and Claris.Guest review byfaribaSweden - 10

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.Guest review byAnonymous - 10
Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10

If you're religious and want to see Cascia and St Rita's birthplace nearby then come or if interested in art history and St Rita's basilica and monastery next door. If driving it's a nice way to pass a morning or afternoon. Not much else to keep you there but scenery roundabout is stunning! We took a taxi organized by hotel and spent an hour or two around her birthplace village -magical views and you can climb up hill to mountain top church!Guest review byMaryUnited Kingdom
