About 20 minutes from Heraklion airport. We are a family of 4 and stayed in a room with a sliding door and two rooms with 1 king and 2 twins with a balcony overlooking the pool and partial ocean view. We stayed at the end of March, the weather was touch and go, some days warm and sunny, others cool and cloudy. The high season began April 1, so some restaurants and the waterpark were closed. The pools were available, but water was ice cold. We didn't mind. My son is 11 and could not use the gym, have to be 15 and up, however, there were other activities like basketball and soccer. Food is all-inclusive, had something for everyone. If you forget to pack something, they have an onsite supermarket with pretty reasonable prices. Lastly, cats, you will see them, about 3 or 4 that hang around. Not too aggressive, but definitely waited for food. Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic. It is like peak hour in Sydney constantly. Parking is horrendous. I would recommend staying out of Heraklion. Drive to Knossos Palace, but go early. The other attraction for us was the Archaeological Museum. Get a uber or taxi to that. The foreshore looks like they gave up on it years ago. It was about a ten minutes walk uphill part way to Koutouloufari, loads of restaurants and bars, a fabulous experience. Walk a little further and you come to Piscopiano, also excellent. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . The hotel complex is well laid out.
The hotel complex is well laid out. Although set in a hill there are plenty of lifts if you don't like using stairs. The rooms are spacious and cleaned daily. Bathrooms are modern and clean. It's a great place to just relax by the pool by the bar or on your balcony. It's north facing so full sun in the morning. There is a good gym and a beauty spa. The evening entertainment is varied and of a good standard. A lot of the shows are held in an open air ampitheatre ideal for a summers evening. There is a regular bus run by the hotel down to the local beach which is helpful as the road down is steep and narrow. The restaurant is excellent. The choice and quality of food is outstanding and delicious. The staff are helpful and always have a smile on their faces. Of course if you are looking for the crystal clear water, Matala is not the one, even though the surronding landscape is something beautiful. Nights in Matala can't be boring. A quiet area, but the beach close by is not the best (still ok if you wanna just refresh a bit) and you need the car if you want to see and explore more (even in the surroundings). There are buses, though, to move to/from major points of interest. The location I chose (Kri-Kri Village) was perfect and I had the best time! Lovely resort with loads of different bars, restaurants and tavernas to suit everyone. Not rowdy or loud. Beaches are good with some places offering free sunbeds. Plenty of different hotels to choose from. A trip up the mountain to Mochos is recommended on a Wednesday night for Greek night. It’s in a square surrounded by tavernas for all to enjoy the entertainment. It’s recommended you get someone to book a table in one of the tavernas as it’s very busy. The beach has some organized areas with sunbeds, but it gets very busy during the summer peak season, particularly on Sundays when many locals also head to the beaches.
