My husband and I booked a junior suite but we were upgrated to suite upon arrival. The suite was spacious, very clean and the bed very comfortable. We stayed there for just one night, as we aimed at catching an early morning flight and wanted to spend the night near the airport, but we would highly recommend the hotel for longer stays as well.

For the location to the staff, it was a perfect stay for us. We had an early check out, and they prepared a breakfast box for us. That was really sweet. We had some request and last minute cancellations (spa), that were well taken into consideration. We had a sea view room and it was magnificent.

Perfect location for exploring the city with lovely views across the city to the harbour. A modern hotel with aircon, which allowed the windows to be shut at night to keep out the city noise. We had a large terrace and when we returned from exploring the city we enjoyed sitting watching the world go by on the streets below with swifts swooping in the sky above. The hotel served a good breakfast buffet with a wide selection. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We would definitely stay again.

FAQs about hotels on Crete

Centuries of History, Days of Sunshine

The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.

Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.

Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.

On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.

We could go on and on about magnificent Crete beaches, but whichever resort you choose, you can be almost guaranteed fantastic food and a good helping of sunshine.

The old town and harbour are stunning- really picturesque with a happy, vibrant vibe, lots to see and loads of small, independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The challenge is trying to find one’s way back to any particular shop, as the Old Town is such a maze of narrow cobbled streets with quaint, pretty houses. I had been told it’s a great place to visit but it vastly exceeded my expectations.

Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic. It is like peak hour in Sydney constantly. Parking is horrendous. I would recommend staying out of Heraklion. Drive to Knossos Palace, but go early. The other attraction for us was the Archaeological Museum. Get a uber or taxi to that. The foreshore looks like they gave up on it years ago. After Chania, Heraklion was a disappointment.

Like many Cretan coastal towns and villages, Rethymno is overwhelmed by us tourists. It's distressing to walk very crowded mediaeval streets surrounded by souvenir shops. The famous bakeries are wonderful and the harbour is really beautiful. Parking has been addressed but the experience is still not pleasant. We found having a drink and a light meal on the waterfront a joyless experience, crowded area and surly service. I would recommend Rethymno for a quick visit to see the Old Town bakeries and the Harbour.

Kissamos offered us a wonderful mix of relaxation and local charm. The nightlife was a pleasant surprise, with cozy bars and lively tavernas where we enjoyed delicious food and drinks. Evening walks through the town square and the nearby streets filled with local shops and traditional products were some of the highlights of our stay. It's a great place for couples looking for a laid-back yet authentic Cretan experience.

Difficult to judge because we came early in the season when there was a cold wind blowing and not all the places were open. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . There were a number of apparently abandoned and ill-maintained buildings, which made the place appear less attractive.

lovely holiday spot, plenty of shops and restaurants, everyone extremely friendly and helpful. About an hour from airport, went to spinalonga and did a few walks, also did the 4 hour train ride which was lovely to see mountains, bit of history etc, wasnt too hot. Both of the bays were good and safe for swimming - one of them a bit pebbly getting in, the other was fine. Supermarkets well stocked. Elounda is flat so easy for walking although pavements a little bumpy. All very accessible and walkable

My favourite place in Crete, it can be whatever you want it...

My favourite place in Crete, it can be whatever you want it to be: quiet and slow, fast and adventurous, relaxing but all the time excellent food. Pick your places by checking reviews and you'll not be disappointed. My favourite restaurants in the city are Tamam, Ginger Concept, Salis, though the list can go on. Places to go out for drinks: The Botanist, Sinagogi or any of the places around EMPRIME on Potie street. Outside the city centre don't miss Periplous, loved the food quality and view and somehow I always end up at Almyriki in Stavros, the view and food are to die for, the beach is just in front. I can go on with so many other places, but it's best to discover and make your own favourites. Getting around the city is easy by walking, however you need a car or scooter to go to beaches outside the city and to visit other small villages.
