Like all ancient moroccan cities, to reach the heart of Chefchaouen, you should go in one of the gates (doors) that surround it. These gates are part of city's culturel heritage. DAR TOUIJAR is located (<100 m) near 2 main gates of the city : The gate “BAB EL AIN”: The largest and most popular door in Chefchaouen. It's located in Kharrazine district and is therefore the point of union between the old and the modern city. His name is associated with the name of Ayn (water source in arabic) that was in the old tannery that the Spaniards turned into barracks when they conquered the north of Morocco. The gate BAB SOUK: This gate is located in the western part of the medina. It’s the largest and most imposing of all the city gates. This door has been notorious in the past historical events, the main ones: the passing of His Majesty the King of Morocco Moulay Hassan 1st during his historic visit in 1886 and the first entry of the Spanish conquerors in the city in 1920.
