This old-school apartment at Myoko, Akakura is a small facility operated by Ryan. You are on your own for skiing at local areas, one of which is literally meters away. Some guidance guidance on the best places to eat and things to visit/see once we meet you. Trade name is Thunderbird which is a guide company with snowcat skiing tour, snowmobile tour and snowshoeing tour operations daily in the pow. Our self-contained units are on Main Street, in the center of the action. Thunderbird Apartments have basic butane cassette stove, microwave, toaster 1 shower and 1 restroom per unit and tatami rooms with futons are the go. Units are 2 in total, and are not really set up for small children during winter months. Heaters are gas stoves (city gas) and toilets are older style.
Full time in Myoko; operator of snow cat skiing, etc. Host studied snow and ice (avalanche) at Shinshu University (Nagano Predfecture) and has been in Japan for 20+ years skiing, is a licensed inbound land operator (Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure), and is fluent in spoken and written Japanese. Mark is set up to point you in the right direction for all things Japowder.
Regional resorts include Seki Onsen, Lotte Arai, Charmant Hiuchi, Cupid Valley Ski Area, etc. Public transportation departs literally across the street from your accomodation to Suginohara, Ikenotaira, Tangram and Madaro Ski Areas. Venture a little further to get to Togakushi, Nozowa Ski Areas and beyond. Meanwhile, all Akakura lifts are a 1-minute walk out the front door of Thunderbird. Neighborhood hot springs in a number of different local properties can be used at most times of day for a small fee. Restaurants and local nightlife are a few footsteps through the snow. Like the cities, small local shops in Akakura offer octopus balls, chicken skewers, or massage, so you’re covered.
