Choose your timing, if you want to avoid crowds then don't go in the evening. You can book all your tours at one of the many outlets. And you'll find the best exchange rates at the currency exchange booths. Be prepared for people to be constantly trying to get your attention for goods and services. It can get a bit crowded, especially around sunset, but that’s part of the energy that makes Patong fun. Patong beach is nice. It's a party place. Seems to be pretty safe. Lots of people selling and renting lots of things. Not a quiet getaway place but a great place to see the nightlife and it is a good place for swimming. The beach has no public bathroom facilities and most places will charge ten to twenty baht for bathroom usage.
