Unfortunately it was raining at times and overcast so our helicopter flight to the glaciers was cancelled. We were given a full refund as the weather was out of our control. We dined at the Landing restaurant. Very good, busy and lively atmosphere, with friendly service, many tables were reserved. Big platefuls of great food, so bring your appetite. Easy parking in Franz, as would be expected. Especially after QT!! The walk to the glacier viewing platform from the car-park shouldn't be underestimated for anyone who is infirm or unfit. But it's worth it for the view when you get there. The west coast road is delightful to drive. But note that there was road clearing operations which literally closed the road north of Haast for a couple of hours! Take heed of any warning signs!Guest review byMichaelNew Zealand - 8.0

Well appointed and spotlessly clean, it is all you need for a very comfortable short stay in Franz Josef. It was perfect for self catering and the cabins are really warm and cosy. Perfect location, 2 minutes walk to the main street and wildlife centre (where you can see kiwis up close, a great experience). Thank you Michelle and Allan, you were delightful hosts! Although it's an excellent town with supermarket, cafes and facilities we enjoyed the rural surrounds of Te Awa Cottages. They felt homey, warm and comfortable with everything we needed to explore the region including maps. We enjoyed sitting on the the wide veranda, watching the sun set over the mountains and the night sky.
