I liked the location because it was convenient to three different hiking areas. I had a sea view room which was clean and comfortable. The nightly dinners allowed me to sample many Japanese delicacies. Staff adapted well to my minimal Japanese language skills and were helpful in areas I needed help. There was good parking space for my rental car and it was convenient to a grocery store.

Our host Mr Nakashima was very kind and generous during our stay. He always replied to our messages via bookings.com very quickly, so it was easy to ask any questions and get help whenever we needed. When we had to change our travel dates and book a different room for the last day, he was very understanding and went the extra mile to assist us in transferring our luggage to the new room. Needless to say, the cottages themselves were adorable and lovely! Very clean and spacious, and the beds were comfortable. The best thing is the shoe dryer machine provided in the room. Because it rains so much in Yakushima, that device was invaluable in preparing our footwear for another day of adventure as they would be dry in no time! On the only one clear night we experienced, we were able to see some stars outside the room. The atmosphere is peaceful and you can hear birds chirping in the morning. It rained almost every day we visited, and yet we truly enjoyed our time in Yakushima thanks to the warm welcome from his family & colleagues, and appreciate all the help (especially advising us on the correct port to go for our departure ferry).

Place has a homely feel, run with a lot of heart. The people who stayed were also very friendly. The whole place feels like family. The host is knowledgeable about the area and is able to offer good advice and information, including about trekking routes. There is a very well-stocked drug store nearby that sells food and drinks, almost like a supermarket.

Sankara was like being in a tropical paradise with a staff that anticipated our every need. The property was absolutely beautiful and many of the staff spoke English very well, so communication was no issue. In all our travels we have never been to such an accommodating hotel where the staff took such great care of us and were so warm and friendly. The food was fantastic, and the lobby always had refreshments available for snacking or drinks. They arranged for our hiking gear so we could go see the Sugi trees--which were amazing!

This property and the host were amazing! The place was not only extremely clean and spacious, but the host was super kind and highly responsive with communication! They helped me in many ways (getting around, car troubles, answering many questions) for my trip to Yakushima. I couldn't thank them enough honestly! I have only been recommending this place to my friends who are visiting Yakushima, and I would continue recommending it for anyone else in the future. It is a great place to stay at!

We loved staying here so much -- the rooms are large and comfortable. Everything we could possibly need was thoughtfully explained and provided. We also especially loved the huge bathtub. The laundry and dryer machine was also very useful. The location is amazing -- a short walk to the beach and a very short drive to an amazing swimming spot in the river. The host is also very kind and communicative and even connected us with a local rental car service, which was wonderful. We wished we could stay longer!
