A Shakespearean Fairytale

A darling of Shakespeare, beautiful Verona is the literary home of Romeo and Juliet. The medieval families of Montague and Capulet immortalised in the tragic play did actually exist and some buildings relating to the Montagues are still present.

Sorry to disappoint, but the place purporting to have been Juliet's house in Verona was not actually where she lived. However, it’s still worth suspending reality for a while and stepping out onto the balcony to see if Romeo turns up.

Another of the must-see Verona sights is the Arena, a largely intact Roman amphitheatre which is now the spectacular setting for outdoor summer operas. Smaller Roman relics include the stone bridge that crosses the river by the Roman theatre whose remains are partly beneath a house.

The city’s narrow streets house many cafes and restaurants which offer cheaper fare than the touristy ones by the Arena, although admittedly the views are less impressive. Life in Verona is laidback and elegant, so expect to see some well-heeled Italians on a post-dinner passeggiata.

Verona Airport is a little out of town, so you’ll need to take a bus to get to your Verona hotel, apartment or B&B. Book with Booking.com for the best choice.

Verona is a beautiful city, but I feel that no matter what time we go there, there are still a lot of tourists. The city is crowded, there is a long wait for attractions, such an Italian classic :) What surprised me a little, the food was a little worse, for example, than in Florence. Maybe I just had a bad choice of restaurant. It's not so bad early in the morning, but the views are better in the early evening :).

We have covered a great deal of Italy, and Verona is a standout. The city is vibrant and cultured and well worth a visit. The locals are friendly, and most people speak some English. Be sure to visit Piazza Erbe, the vibrant heart of the city.

We did four and a half days with included a day trip to lake Garda. Verona is beautiful. Lots to see especially if you like History. I would suggest getting to Juliets balcony first thing as it got super busy and definitely go inside as the building is beautiful and you get to go on the balcony. This was the busiest place. Gorgeous churches and good shopping. If you do a walking tour you can probably do it in two days but we wanted to have a more restful exploration of the city so skipped the walking tour and went to places ourselves with lots of stops for icecream and hot chocolate! There are beautiful gardens near the Roman theatre and palace apartments which are definitely recommended! There are also great galleries and view points as well as the oldest continuously used library!

If you compare Verona city center to that of Florence, it is far more condensed, which makes it easy to get around particularly on foot. If you're looking to take in most of the sites, purchasing the Verona Card makes life easier. That said, most sites are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. You can visit most everything in two-days. Would recommend spending a third day for a day trip to Lake Garda or the nearby vineyards.

Verona is like a mini Florence with beautiful churches and amazing history without the extreme crowds, high prices and extreme touristy feel. It was much easier to get around in, less hectic and overall far friendlier and more fun to visit. The food there was better too and less expensive, more local feeling rather then one big tourist trap. Wish we had stayed longer and cut our Florence time shorter.

Verona — a city you can’t help but fall in love with 💛

Verona — a city you can’t help but fall in love with 💛 Walking through its charming streets feels like traveling back in time. Narrow cobblestone lanes, cozy cafés, the sound of street musicians, and the aroma of fresh espresso create a truly magical atmosphere. The Verona Arena is breathtaking — especially at sunset, when its ancient walls glow in golden light. The view from Ponte Pietra is simply unforgettable, and a stroll along the Adige River reveals the city’s romantic soul. Verona isn’t just the city of Romeo and Juliet — it’s a place where history and modern life blend perfectly. I’ll definitely come back one day ❤️
