For my first-ever hostel experience, Okupia Athens truly exceeded expectations. The place was spotless, and every member of the staff was incredibly kind and welcoming. The location couldn’t be more convenient—just a short walk from the metro and the iconic Acropolis. I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to hostel stays!

FAQs about hotels in Athens

Dynamic City With 3400 Years of History

With the Acropolis as the jewel in the archaeological crown of Athens, this city is full of history while embracing the future. Take a stroll back in time through the neoclassical streets of the Plaka, where you'll find tavernas serving tantalizing souvlaki and mousaka, street vendors and live entertainment.

A trip to the Parthenon and the Agora top most lists and can also be appreciated from a distance by walking along the Dionysiou Aeropagitou street, which is away from the busy crowds of the city center.

The changing of the guard occurs every hour on the famous Syntagma Square. From here, Ermou Street provides shopaholics with a fashionable retail sanctuary. The upscale districts Kolonaki and Kifisia are also bursting with fancy boutiques, galleries and bars.

Athens has some of the finest museums in the world, such as the National Archaeological, Acropolis and Benaki Museums. What Guests Said About Athens:

Our first time in Athens was fantastic.

Our first time in Athens was fantastic. The Akropolis is really worth the visit, so is the adjoining museum, even with kids. A lot is doable by foot, but the metro is an easy alternative. Plaka is a vibrant part of the city, with good food and friendly people. We did a hop on hop off tour, so we saw a bit of the coast line as well. It really is a city that combines view on mountains , seaside, culture and ancient columns and the business of a big town, which actually works well. Autumn is great to visit, we had sunny days with 24 degrees which is very doable for any activity 😀

The city is rich with history, the Greeks are my favorite in all Europe, the food is superbly delicious, the shopping area and streets are amazing. My only drawback is the flights companies that lands in Athens airport! it's quite hard to get out or in Athens! i mean the connections when you fly from Athens or to Athens is quite challenging! several times we wanted to fly to Rhodes but unfortunately we couldn't when we reach Athens cause the timing of domestic flights to Greek islands aren't equal & doesn't match our arriving times! unfortunately i never faced this on other European cities, only with Athens.

Athens is an interesting city.

Athens is an interesting city. We went with our three boys, 4, 8 and 11. The older two love Greek mythology and were excited to see the sights. Athens is gritty but also has the most amazing food and coffee scene. There were times when I felt slightly on edge after dark. We had some extraordinary meals and delicious coffee but the historical side was disappointing. The acropolis has been taken apart for renovation and all they talk about in the signs going round is the renovation. There is so much opportunity to spark imagination with all the Greek stories of the gods but it was so dry. The museum is similar. My kids loved the changing of the guard and we enjoyed exploring all the streets around the acropolis. 2 days is more than enough!

Coming off a mid-size ship cruisin the less seen Greek Islands, Athen was to be seeing the "main" sites. An hour bus trip out for Sunset Poseidon Temple with excellent guide provided many historical points not commonly known by us from the US. Athens Walks tours of Acropolis & Parthenon also held new understandings of mythological figures - and how we find their influence all around us still today! The best of all was the private guide tour- exploring not heavy tourist area and easier dialogue for deeper understanding of the rise & fall - especially next to today's times! Their cultural view of larger 'gray' areas in Truth having had 12 different gods, each with their own interests that often contradicted each other. What a wonderful perspective in greater considerations & openness when looking at situations than the black & white stance of main US culture. I went to see these amazing ancient feats of architecture and art - and found my mind expanding...!! I wish I had more time to explore that aspect. Speaking with natives is much richer than reading a book.

If you're staying near the Acropolis, you're in the perfect...

If you're staying near the Acropolis, you're in the perfect spot—most major historical sites in Athens, including the Acropolis Museum, Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma Square, are within easy walking distance and can be explored in a single day. For day trips outside Athens, the Peloponnese is your best bet. Destinations like Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplio are reachable within 1.5–2 hours and offer rich archaeological and cultural experiences. In contrast, places like Delphi or Meteora require longer travel times (over 3 hours one way), making them less ideal for a single-day outing. If you're short on time, it's often more rewarding to soak up Athens' vibrant neighborhoods and enjoy traditional Greek tavernas. The Monastiraki Flea Market has become highly tourist-oriented in recent years. While it still retains some charm, many of the original antique and vintage vendors have been replaced by stalls selling mass-produced souvenirs. It's worth a stroll, but manage your expectations. To escape the crowds, consider visiting the armored cruiser Georgios Averof, docked at Flisvos Marina. It's the only surviving ship of its class in the world and now serves as a floating naval museum. A hidden gem for history buffs, it offers a peaceful break from the city bustle. If you're planning a quick island getaway, skip the temptation to island-hop. Choose just one island and take a regular ferry for a more relaxed experience. Hydra is a standout choice: it's car-free, scenic, and known for its artistic vibe and famously friendly cats. While not the most remote island geographically, its lack of motor vehicles and slower pace make it feel like a true escape.

Incredibly lively city, obviously with many antique monuments, I'm not going to list those. But I would call attention to a lesser-known museum - the Museum of antique Greek Technology, right in the center of the city. Unbelievable, we barely could leave it after 3 hours...

I've stayed at the Platon 3 or 4 times over the last couple of years. I go rock climbing in Greece (Leonidio) and flight times mean that we need accommodation near the airport either on arrival or on departure. Platon is well-located and good value. Helpful staff. Recommended for any climbers needing an overnight after or before their onward travel. And if it takes your fancy, it's easy enough to get public transport into Athens centre to do the tourist thing.
