There is significant historical and cultural interest in Wigan, especially industrial architecture and the wonderful local museum and George Orwell library. The people are very friendly, talk to them! The town has suffered enormously from economic transition and the effects are still playing out. It's a small sleepy town. Although it has everything you need. Very friendly and well located for both going to the rugby and sampling the "delights" of Wigan's fine hostelries in the town, which are all very nearby.
