Lewes is very good as a place to stay if you are interested...

Lewes is very good as a place to stay if you are interested in history or just like browsing local shops. It also has excellent railway connections so you can get to Brighton, Hastings, Eastbourne and up into Sussex by public transport. It is hilly and a good base if you want to explore the South Downs by walking. A good range of restaurants, pubs and cafes too.

Remains of Norman castle on its motte with extensive views.

Remains of Norman castle on its motte with extensive views. Small museum shows short film about history of Lewes & there is an excellent model of it. Interesting town architecturally but rather a lot of traffic. Very hilly.

Friendly people, smiling faces.

Friendly people, smiling faces. Very historic and amazing views from the Castle especially. 9 pubs within a 3 minute walk, all serving food. A plethora of restaurants, my favourite being Rustico which sells delicious Pastas and Pizzas. Fantastic bus services to and from surrounding towns and villages, stretching from Eastbourne to Brighton. Good train services and fast ones to London.

We didn't really see much of Lewes as most of our weekend...

We didn't really see much of Lewes as most of our weekend was spent in Brighton for the marathon. However, what we did see was very nice and we did spend an enjoyable evening there with family prior to the marathon at ASK Italian restaurant. We intended using the train service into Brighton but due to engineering works they were not running, however regular buses were laid on in their place which ran until around 11.30 pm, so not a problem. Would have liked a little more time to look around Lewes as have heard from family members that it is a lovely place to visit.

Lewes is a graceful, historic English town with a great deal...

Lewes is a graceful, historic English town with a great deal to see and experience - especially if culture and history is your thing, but also as a base for exploring the South Downs, in which Lewes nestles. There are numerous historic sites of keen interest. On this visit, we only managed the 'Charlestons' but both were memorable. It's interesting enough to just wander around the streets. Brickwork and guttering nerds will be ecstatic! Watch the 500 year tradition of bowls in the castle? We also had an intriguing night out in the Hillcrest Community Centre in Newhaven that was brilliantly different and entertaining. (With a good cafe) What to look out for? Well... the pubs are amazing, too. The history is second-to-none, the folk scene and culture are brimful... Maybe just watch out for the prices in the posh shops, you might need to sell your car to buy that dress!

Lovely little town, many historic building in Lewes or nearby; great walking on the south Downs, or along the river for the less energetic. Good public transport links to Brighton and/or along south coast.

We had a two night stay whilst attending a wedding nearby. Very welcoming staff on our first night and friendly throughout our stay. Breakfast choices were lovely, amazing cooked breakfasts. We didn't get chance to stay for lunch/dinner but the menus looked delicious! We managed to follow one of the recommended walks from the doorstep so could explore a little too. Good provisions such as iron/ironing board + a fan. Very clean room with attention to details.

Stayed for a wedding in Lewes and it was close to the venue and was an affordable option. The mattress was comfortable and we slept well. The only downside was that the mattress was too small for the bed frame and there was a 10cm gap on one side, which made getting in and out a little uncomfortable. Tea and coffee facilities in the room, which was nice, and it was all very clean.

Well located in central Lewes with quality fixtures and furnishings. The mass DVD collection with the projector screen was a good use of space, and the beds were nice and comfortable. The kitchen hot water boiler wasn't working for teas and coffees but the staff were amazingly helpful to bring over a nice kettle.
