From the check in with the amazing Robert, the kind help of Victoria and Anna, along with David and his great sense of humor, they made this stay incredible and special. They make you feel right at home, the food is delicious, it can keep you full for a whole day even. Hygiene top notch, atmosphere so lovely, everything is so beautiful and on a high level. You feel like you're royalty when you stay there. Would definitely come again whenever I visit the UK!

The Cartologist was a fantastic place to stay. We were only there for one night but wish it had been longer~ We arrived early for check in but the staff found a way so we could have early access. Very hospitable! There is a lovely bar, cute and quaint. And a cozy and comfortable cafe with coffee and meals. The outdoor space (beer garden) was also a big plus. Easy access to the train station and to the city center. I look forward to staying there again!

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

Durham is most beautiful city in the UK

Durham is most beautiful city in the UK Cathedral is the best in UK and its free to enter Guided tour of the castle (£7.50) and going up the cathedral tower (£10) are well worth doing Walking by the river is also recommended. Don't miss the view of the cathedral and the old mill by the weir from the boat house near Prebends Bridge

Durham City was a great place to visit.

Durham City was a great place to visit. You can spend half a day in the Cathedral, the rest of the time wandering around the city and river, stopping to eat and drink in the great pubs. If you want to get further afield, drive to Beamish Museum, go up onto the Pennines, Visit Kielder Forest, go the coast (Lindisfarne is worth a visit), Whitby isn't that far away and the drive over the moors is great.

Much of the city is geared towards students but we found at least two good restaurants - the Turkish one and the Italian above it. Beamish was well worth the visit. The first day, we could not gain access to the cathedral because it was matriculation day for the university - but well worth going the second day. Unfortunately, access to the castle is limited to going with a tour on certain days, since it is also a living university college.

We loved Durham but the Townhouse -the property we booked and paid for through booking.com had shut down. So this was a very stressful start to our stay. We had to find and pay for alternative accommodation out of town as all hotels were booked. Now I cannot get through to anyone from booking.com to get a refund as their help centre is hopeless

Durham city has some obvious highlights like the cathedral, but we preferred the more intimate National Trust Crook Hall Garden near the city centre. Park and Ride buses essential, don't bring a car in. Beamish Open Air Museum is half an hour north. We spent 7 hours there and still missed lots of it. Tickets are expensive for one day but cover 12 months so we'll be back. Shildon Locomotion Museum (NRM) is great for railway fans. Bleak high villages to the west then open moorland we didn't have time to explore. Remnants of England's industrial history everywhere if you look for them.

We had a comfortable stay in this apartment. It was clean, with a very comfy bed and a cosy lounge area, and the location was convenient for getting into Durham city centre (just a couple of miles away with a local bus service). There’s also a great pizza takeaway nearby, which was a real bonus. The property could benefit from some attention in the bathroom, where we noticed mould around the shower and a leak. However, overall, it made a good base for exploring the area.
