Fascinating former mining town right on the edge of the...
Fascinating former mining town right on the edge of the Vosges mountains which has a very strong sense of its own history, industrial and social. I guess that its location in this beautiful valley has helped it regain some of the prosperity of former times through encouraging both local cultural activities (eg the C'est dans la Vallée music festival) and judicious provision of good tourist facilities. Maybe this is not enough for every resident but you do get a sense of a town at peace with itself and welcoming of visitors. The history of the region, with its contested border with Germany, is still in the air, but not in a bad way. Long bumpy single lane farm track to reach property. Accommodation is a farm situated on mountainside with nice views, but rooms are in need of upgrading as furnishings are rather tired.
