Charming German Lake Town
The German town of Konstanz is located on the shores of Lake Constance, whose waters define the borders between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. With a medieval feeling, the Old Town mixes narrow cobbled streets and squares with colourfully decorated houses, some of them more than 700 years old.
With settlements in the area dating back to the Stone Age, the ancient town of ‘Drusomagus’ was founded by Romans around 50 AD, with the name ‘Constantia’ first appearing during the 4th century. Since the Middle Age, the city grew as an important spiritual and trade centre, something noticeable in its prominent old houses. Konstanz is a brilliant place to stay for a few nights on an interrailing trip. You can visit Lichtenstein within 1.5 hours on train, and same with Rheinfalls, Schaffhausen. Great for daytrips, and then returning in the evening, Konstanz comes alive with beautiful lights and the pier. It's very easy to get around at the main train station, and the old town is beautiful, and it's fun to be able to walk across the border to Switzerland. Boat ferries run everywhere around the lake quaint side streets with shops and restaurants and bars.
