This is Mecca for Wagner fans in July and August. The acoustics of the Festspielhaus are superb and unique--no other place achieves that blend of voice and orchestra. We went there for the opera experience, which is indeed spectacular if you like Wagner. The city is rather ugly in my opinion, and highly car oriented. Outside of the old town, the city is dominated by wide roads driven at high speed. The old town itself is fairly unpleasant as well, though there are some nice culinary experiences to be had. I stayed in Bayreuth six times before It is a charming city, but of course the major reason for going is the Wagner festival. It is well provided for in terms of restaurants and bars.
