I did not realize when I booked our hotel that Wengen was reachable by train only. I thought I had made a terrible mistake. But it was the best mistake of my life. We were there the weekend of the cheese festival and that was a great experience. We felt like locals! We stayed at Hotel Jungfraublick and I highly recommend it. Wengen is an unbelievably charming town perched above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with incredible views of the valley and its waterfalls and the surrounding moutains. There are lovely hikes of varying degrees of difficulty that take you to great spots. And it is easy to access other attractions in the Jungfrau region. It is worth some research into the various transport passes. You definitely want some kind of pass if you are there for multiple days. My wife and I also visited Grindelwald for a day, and we enjoyed it. It is more built up, with more activities and probably more nightlife than Wengen. But, to our taste, we would definitely rate Wengen higher given its very small town vibe and unbeatable views.Guest review byKennethUnited States - 10
Quiet village (car-free) in a beautiful location.
Quiet village (car-free) in a beautiful location. Well-served by trains from Lauterbrunnen every half-hour (one of THE scenic rail journeys in the Alps) with connections to Männlichen and Kleine Scheidegg for high-level walking. Easy to reach Mürren, Stechelberg, Gimmelwald, etc., for hiking ... also not far from Interlaken, its two lakes, and good rail connections throughout the country; I did Fribourg and back on a dull day. Wengen itself has lovely local hikes e.g. down to Lauterbrunnen or up to the café at Allmend ... many gorgeous chalets in the village with well-tended gardens and window boxes ... seeing the autumn descent of the cattle from the high pastures was a real highlight of the trip ... Wengen is a perfect spot to make home base while you explore the Lauterbrunnen and Jungfrau region. This car free village is easily accessible by train from Lauterbrunnen, where you find a relatively cheap car park and train access to Interlaken. Wengen felt less crowded than Mürren or Lauterbrunnen in the valley. There are numerous restaurants, stores, and two grocery stores in town to stock up on essentials. Wengen location was great and not as busy compared to Grindelwald. No cars allowed and quieter location. It’s definitely more of a ski village feel. The train station is easily accessible to all lodging. Only downside is the lack of restaurant options compared to larger villages such as Grindelwald. Wengen was better than expected.
Wengen was better than expected. The trains up and down were so good and reliable. The town has an amazing position high above Lauterbrunnen valley. Good walks through and around Wengen. Choice of restaurants were ok but we were expecting more. Lots to do, definitely be back one day. It is a bit up and down so expect a workout. The location is great and the area is something. It was the fist time in Swiss Alps but after this trip I am sure we gonna come back. They keep cleanliness on a high level. Room was pretty nice and we got amazing view from our balcony to Swiss Alps ( room 235 ). I recommend this room big time. Also very sweet from the hotel is having coffee machine at the room. You could easily see that they were doing their bests for the comfort of the guests. Top notch service! We chose a room with the Jungfrau view and balcony, and are glad that we did that; such beautiful view. We had a coffee machine in our room with the capsules included. They also offer complementary hot beverages from the machine in the lobby throughout the day.
