This time I saw Shkodra with different eyes. The city’s diversity of people and cultural mix stood out strongly, and over the weekend the lively atmosphere of parties gave it an energetic spirit. What touched me most, however, were the Catholic churches scattered around the city. Stepping into them gave me a profound sense of spirituality and peace, balancing the vibrant social scene outside. Reviews we read of Shkoder said it's a university town with lots of biking. Not sure what those reviewers were writing about, but there weren't many bike friendly areas and the town was not as vibrant as we expected. We did spend some time in the Shiroka area on the lake a 10 minute or so drive from Shkoder and that was very nice - good restaurants and lake activities. Shkoder is a lovely city with great views, food and nice accommodation facilities. It's a safe place for families and youths with lots of activities around. I used it as a base to be able to explore the north of Albania. The hotel was easy to find, down a dead end road so it was quiet. With a gated parking area it felt secure. It was family run and the staff were very welcoming and helpful. It was great to have a small fridge in the room, which was huge. Good wifi and a lovely shower too!
